10 Myths of Career Development Plans • Why we don't invest in ourselves!

Do you have a personal or career development plan?  I know many professionals that don't.

If you do have a plan, when was the last time you looked at it or updated it?

Just to make sure we are all on the same page - Career Development plans go by different names such as personal development plan, professional development plan, individual development plan.

The purpose of a career development plan is to set a path for you to reach your career goals and desired positions.

 

10 Myths of Career Development Plans • Why we don't invest in ourselves!

  1. My manager is responsible - You the employee are in the driver's seat
  2. My company will provide - Not always true
  3. I already have an advanced degree - be a lifelong learner
  4. I just started a new position
  5. I have an annual performance review - only reviews your current position goals 
  6. I am focused on my current job - if you desire to stay in your current role, consider ways to deliver more value. I challenge you to think bigger - you can do more!
  7. I don't have time - personal free time
  8. I don't have time - at work
  9. Costs too much - The investment in your future will be worth it.  You will increase your options for raises, bonuses, and promotions.  In addition, there are many lower cost options online these days. 
  10. I already have one - Congratulations!  Consider updating it every 6 months 

 

Myths for Managers:

  1. Employee is responsible
  2. There's not enough time
  3. Employees just want a raise or promotion
  4. Employee will want to leave
  5. Focus on high achievers

 

My favorite quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson related to this topic that I have in my office is:

"Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow."
