A connector is an expert at connecting and uniting people, knowledge, and resources and their success stems from bringing a level of energy and clarity for themselves and others.
I would like to share a bit about my personal story and path that drove me to help others to be connectors and achieve their individual and company goals. There are three areas that shaped the person I am today and my strong drive to make connections and develop people. These experiences were the early loss of my mom, my diverse leadership experiences, and becoming a mother.
My early life was shaped by the loss of my mother when I was 19 and just finishing my freshman year of college. Prior to her passing, she imparted words of inspiration and wisdom. She told me to "reach for the stars and continue to grow". She urged me not to make her mistakes of not prioritizing herself and not finishing college. My parents had always instilled in me a strong work ethic as they had both worked two jobs for many years. With their support and encouragement, I had already chosen to pursue the profession of Pharmacy and went on to complete my bachelors and doctorate to become a pharmacist and completed subsequently completed advanced residency training and a Masters in Healthcare Administration. I appreciate the early advice and believe I would have made my Mom proud.
My diverse background includes patient care as a clinical pharmacist and leadership roles in healthcare, healthsystems, life science industry, and academia. I have held many volunteer leadership roles in local, regional, and national professional organizations, and community organizations. I have also had the opportunity to mentor and coach people across diverse industry sectors including technology, manufacturing, and entrepreneurs.
Through my professional and volunteer life I have seen how the lack of connections and use of key leadership and productivity tools has prevented individuals, departments, companies, and community organizations from executing on their missions. It has become my mission to connect the dots, create connections, and develop connectors.
While I have been a leader, I have also been the employee who pushed for my own development and recognize that not all managers have expertise or experience in how to develop their employees. I believe the employee needs to know more about how to plan and request development support while managers also need to expand their skills in the area of growth development planning to ensure a engaged team.
I have consistently been complimented and sought out for coaching in mentoring in professional development topics such as growth development plans, networking, and productivity. And while this example may date me, my colleagues used to call me their 'Palm Pilot' (personal digital assistant) because I had a knack for being organized.
My most recent leadership experience has been leading pharmacy services for a community health system and clinical services for an academic health system. In these roles I have been able to combine my years of professional growth with passion for patients and pharmacy. I expanded innovative pharmacy services and added resources in acute and ambulatory care. I am thrilled to demonstrate that Pharmacy Can Do More With MoreTM.
I have had many successes making connections. Here are just a few examples.
I married my college sweetheart after reuniting several years later and we were blessed with three wonderful children. Since having two for the price of one - twins, , I have had 3 children under the age of 5. I felt I was losing some parts of me that made me feel balanced and overall successful in life. It was time that I reevaluated my priorities and that is when I started looking at and assessing my life in four areas - self, career, family/friends, and community. Some people may break this down differently, but this is what has worked best for me as everything I prioritize can go into one of these areas.
I do think you can have it all. Admittedly, I am on the fence about the debate of can you have work-life balance. My philosophy is to have as much work-life integration (connection) as possible and to be present in the moment for which ever area you are involved with. I want to make a special note that this applies to men as much as it does women, and maybe more so, as they tend to feel a different pressure to prioritize career over other areas of life. For me to live a connected life, I ensure my annual, monthly. weekly, and daily planning include the four life areas.
So you have now heard a bit of my story and path that drove me to help others to be connectors and achieve their individual and company goals. The three experiences that shaped the person I am today and my strong drive to make connections and develop people are the early loss of my mom, my diverse leadership experiences, and becoming a mother.
Today, I still work as a leader in a healthcare system where I practice what I have learned and develop connectors. I am passionate about spending time on the right things to develop others and deliver strategic, focused results. The strengths I utilize to exceed my goals and help others are achiever, relator, learner, and focus.
